Defend Peaceful Protest
Respect and Justice

Defend Peaceful Protest was formed in response to the G20 Protests, which exposed the danger that exists when power is illegitimately deployed by the UK police force.

The Metropolitan Police’s decision to employ tactics
of excessive force and control fomented an
unpredictable and dangerous environment. These tactics resulted in the infringement of human rights
and civil liberties for both protesters and passers-by
as well as numerous cases of assaults on protesters. The disproportionate use of force ultimately led to
the death of Ian Tomlinson, an innocent
passer-by.

We believe that immediate action is necessary
to reform police tactics in order to prevent individuals from feeling deterred from exercising their right to protest.

Our campaign is inclusive, non-aligned politically, and advocates non-violence. It aims for inclusiveness across the political spectrum and to protect the right to protest for all individuals and their right to freedom of expression. Through legal channels and mass pressure we seek to make this an important issue for all who wish to exercise their right to peacefully protest without intimidation.

Public protest is deeply rooted in our political culture. There have been innumerable cases when public demonstrations of support for a cause, or opposition
to a policy or government, have changed the course
of history. The right to protest is invaluable and must be protected! Protesters should be seen and heard!

Know your rights

  • The G20 is just one example of over zealous, violent and intimidatory policing. We support the protection of the right to protest, without intimidation, for people with all manner of beliefs
  • We defend civil liberties against encroachment from authoritarian legislation and work to end the use of violent tactics which deter peaceful protestors
